Gohan's Song by starrdust411 Gohan's Song by starrdust411
As may know I've become a fan of Adventure Time recently and every Adventure Time fan knows Marceline's fry song. Well the other day I was browsing YouTube and came across the full lyrics to that song by Rebecca Sugar and it turned a slightly sad song into a heartbreaking song (especially when you scroll through the comments as read response from YouTubers whose fathers have actually abandoned or neglected them in real life). Then one day the idea came to apply this song to Gohan's story, because it fit so well with his relationship with Goku.

Now before anyone gets upset at me, let me just say that I am a fan of Goku (he's my favorite character after all) but he is a terrible father. Period. Yes there is no arguing that he loves his kids and did a lot for them, but ultimately he did willingly abandon his family several times and never really made any of them his first priority. Yes there was that moment during the Cell Games when he admitted he was crap dad and a terrible husband, but that doesn't mean much when he, as a character, doesn't learn or change from that experience since after the Buu saga he goes and leaves his family again to train some random kid he just met. So yeah, Gohan (and Goten) should have a lot of justifyable resentment towards his dad.

I made the last frame Gohan and Goku hugging because I didn't want this entire comic to be a major bummer, but I kept Goku's face out of focus to further emphasize the distance in their relationship.

i do understand why people think that Goku is a terrible father but i believe that he never had the choice to stay with his family, he has the weight of the entire universe on his shoulders and he would never just let people die just so he could stay home to be with his family

I have to respectfully disagree because while there were times when Goku was off training to save the world or staying away for the greater good (such as when he didn't come back after the Cell Saga) there were times when he left just because he wanted to leave. For example, when he didn't come back after the battle on Namek. There was no dire reason for him to stay in space, he did so just because he wanted to learn a new technique. Yardrat wasn't in danger, there was no impending threat, he just didn't come back and while there was no issue on Earth that needed his attention, it shouldn't have to boil down to life or death for a man to spend time with his wife and child.

Then there was the very end of the series when he just left to train Uub. Again there was no dire reason for him to do so, but he just up and left anyway without discussing the issue with anyone. Again there is no solid evidence that he stayed away completely during that time (GT implied he did, but I don't consider that series canon) but it's another large chunk of time away from the family he's been in and out of for years.

I'm not saying Goku is a bad person, but the fact is that he is ultimately not a good father and that's okay, because no character can be perfect and it's acceptable for them to have flaws or negative traits.

exactly and i still believe he stayed away because he believed that he had to get stronger to keep the earth safe, he knew Gohan was strong enough to look after Chi Chi and deep down he knew they understood

I disagree because Goku had no way of knowing that there would be an impending danger in the near future. As far as he knew Freeza was dead and he was the strongest man on Earth. Goku only wants to get stronger because his saiya-jin blood drives him to get stronger, but that's not a great reason to leave a six year old in charge of protecting the Earth.

well Piccolo and the others had also been revived and Goku has great faith in them

with Vegeta, Gohan and Piccolo on Earth Goku assumed that it was safe

Okay, I feel like we're just talking in circles so I'm just going to say this: Goku simply does not meet up with my idea of a good father. That being someone who is emotionally available and nurturing towards their child/children. Goku's wants and desires are simple (eat, fight, train) and he assumes everyone else is the same. They are not the same. Gohan and Goten are not the same. Goku does not try to reach out to them or relate in any other are outside of fighting, so again to me that means he is lacking in parental skills.

i agree with you on that but aside from the fanfiction has it effected Gohan or Goten badly? aside from Gohan occasionally mentioning that he misses his dad he's hardly damaged by his absence as thanks to his mother he's the planets smartest person and thanks to his father he can literally crush mountains
